Glin Castle is a romantic castellated mansion enjoying a glorious setting within some 380 acres of mature parkland. Benefiting from being superbly positioned, it overlooks the Shannon estuary on the periphery of the attractive Glin village and is less than 1 hour’s drive from Limerick city centre and Shannon International airport. Castle comprises of a reception hall, inner stair hall, dining room, drawing room, library, smoking room, kitchens with ancillary service rooms, 2 master and 4 bedroom suites, along with 8 bedroom suites on the 1st floor and 7 more on the 2nd floor.
History:
Originally Normans, the Knights of Glin are a branch of the Desmond Geraldines, who were also called the Fitzgeralds.
The original castle which is still visible today on the banks of the Glencorbry was the home of the Knights of Glin from about 1260 until 1642.
The present day Glin Castle was built between 1780 and 1790 by John Bateman and is open to visitors by appointment, set in a 500 acre wooded demesne this castle overlooks the Shannon Estuary.
Unlike most knighthoods, this title was conformed upon the Fitzgeralds in 1732 and can only be passed through inheritance to a son.
In 2011, the 29th Knight of Glin Desmond John Villiers Fitzgerald passed away and the title of Knight of Glin was not passed on.
Features:
The castle has superb interiors with decorative plasterwork and notable collections of Irish furniture and paintings. The front hall with a screen of Corinthian columns and a neo-Classical ceiling leads to the great ‘flying staircase’ and a gracefully decorated Venetian window looking out onto the gardens. All the other reception rooms lead off this enfilade and the drawing room, with its bowed front window, has charmingly naïve plaster decoration. In the library a broken pedimented mahogany bookcase artfully conceals a door leading to the staircase hall.
